This is a crucial moment that could make or break your chances of landing the job. Here are some key points to keep in mind that could truly make a big difference.
1. You’ve made it through the interview. Are you still interested in the job? Then say so. Deliver a confident close, such as “Well, I’m sold. I'm very impressed with everything that I've seen here today, and I’m confident that I could excel in this position, and with this company. What is the next step?" This clearly lets the interviewer know your level of interest and enthusiasm for the available position.
2. If no immediate commitment is made, don’t stress about it. The interviewer may need to speak with other people in the company before making a decision, or may have additional interviews scheduled with other candidates. Let the interviewer know that you’d like to follow up with them, and politely ask for a good date to do so.
3. Be sure to offer a sincere thank you to the interviewer for his or her time and consideration, and obtain their business card so that you can e-mail a written thank you as well. The written thank you should be sent within 24 hours after your interview, and should reiterate a key point that the interviewer made during the meeting, which will show them that you’re a good listener.
